Welcome back to the Chef Spotlight Series. Today, we’re getting to know chef Daniel Shipley who, together with his brother Michael, owns and operates Farm’s Gate Foods & Catering. Based in Duncan, the catering business travels across Vancouver Island, and the food truck is a staple at the Thursday night Esquimalt Market where you can find farm-fresh offerings. Truly an advocate of the Farm to Table movement, Shipley uses local ingredients to create an ever-changing seasonal menu. Get to know Shipley in his own words, and check out his recipe for Winter Squash Fritters, perfect for the season.
A new micro-bakery just opened its doors to the Fairfield community, with cakes, pies, and sandwiches they are ready to welcome the neighbourhood! Formerly occupied by The Cottage Bakery, Deer and Dough have stepped in as the go-to neighbourhood cafe.
There’s a new haus on the block! Eva Schnitzelhaus opened its doors in the heart of downtown Victoria, taking over the Rain Dogs location on Fisgard Street. This open space has been transformed into an après ski chalet-style restaurant by a skilled team who all have roots in the award-winning Agrius Restaurant. Executive chef and CEO Maxime Durand, along with sous chef Émile Hudon-Donne, created a playful menu with their own twists on German, Swiss, and Austrian classics.
