Best bakeries in Victoria 2023

These are the best bakeries in Victoria this year, as selected by our readers in the annual Tasting Victoria Restaurant Awards

In some ways, desserts are known as an extra indulgence at the dinner table: a wink-wink or nudge-nudge you tease those with an extra bit of appetite. But there’s so much more to it—baking alone is an art form. Luckily, Victoria is full of artisan bakers and bakeries perfecting the art form, and this year, Victoria voted with that mind.

Here’s who Victoria voted as the top three bakeries in the city.

Crust Bakery

This perennial local favourite is a family-owned-and-operated business which has been run by chef Tom Moore and Crystal Moore since opening in 2013. The Crust philosophy is that food should be stylish, yet unpretentious, and be simple; but above all, it must taste delicious. From kronuts to croissants, and tarts and custards, Victoria eats the Crust each and every time—and it’s no surprise Victoria has voted it the top spot, once again!

Fol Epi

With a contemporary approach to classic French-influenced breads and pastries, Fol Epi sources fine organically grown ingredients, carefully handled by their skilled bakers to develop outstanding flavours, textures, and aromas. Their food starts with great ingredients and care, with organic Red Fife Wheat sourced from Loiselle Family Farm in Saskatchewan as well as organic Sablé Wheat from Hillcrest Farm in the Cowichan Valley.

Working Culture Bread

Working Culture Bread is a sourdough-focused bakery, making organic loaves daily from scratch. Co-owned by Adam Christie and Jess Rivers, Working Culture opened in 2020 and has aimed from the start to be a community hub in the Rock Bay neighbourhood. The bakery uses Canadian grains, local and seasonal ingredients, and works with Island producers wherever possible.
