With Victoria being one of the closest North American cities across the North Pacific Ocean, Japanese cuisine thrives here. Coupled with restauranteur’s access to fresh fish, and local farms, Victoria is full of expertly-crafted sushi restaurants bringing as close to an authentic Japanese experience as one can get in BC.

Nubo Japanese Tapas

Nubo Japanese Tapas takes first for the second year in a row. Here, you can expect Japanese dining and cuisine with an array of tapas, rolls, sashimi, and salads, along with sake, draught beers, ciders, cocktails, and wines—not to mention a selection of non-alcoholic beverages. Nubo is equal parts quality and craftsmanship, and a clear local favourite.

Fujiya

In 1977, Shigeru Hirai opened the first Fujiya store in old Japantown, Vancouver. His goal: for everyone to be able to enjoy Japanese food—whether on the go or prepared at home. After opening the first store, Fujiya expanded with a store in Richmond in 1989 and Victoria in 1991. Now, it has taken second place in this year’s Tasting Victoria awards.

Sen Zushi

Sen Zushi ensures that when you walk in you get an authentic Japanese experience. Cooks have been trained to prepare Japanese dishes balanced in flavour and low in calories. Sen Zushi uses little red meat, oils, fats, and dairy products, and the menu includes classic Japanese foods like sashimi, rolls, grilled fish, and udon noodles
