With Lunar New Year coming up on Jan. 29, marking the beginning of the Year of the Snake, we thought it would be interesting to share a little bit more about the Best Chinese restaurants voted in the Tasting Victoria Awards. If you’ve ever wondered where some of the best places in Victoria for Chinese food are, or you’ve never tried it, start at the top of this list and work your way down.

J&J Wonton Noodle House

Specializing in Cantonese and Szechuan food, J&J Wonton Noodle House has won first place for the second time in a row as the best Chinese restaurant. The restaurant tries to use as many local ingredients as possible, with a good selection of gluten-free and vegan options, and serves generous portions full of flavour.

Don Mee Seafood Restaurant

This long-running, old-fashioned Chinese institution has been in Victoria for more than 80 years. At Don Mee, everything is served in the classic Chinese fashion—food is served in the centre of the table, where guests help themselves. It offers dim sum and other Cantonese and Sichuan plates, amassing lineups that often spill out into the heart of Chinatown.

Fan Tan Cafe

A focal point in historic Chinatown, Fan Tan Cafe is situated beside the popular tourist attraction Fan Tan Alley—an alley that used to be part of a gambling district in Victoria. Fan Tan Cafe is known for its noodle dishes and bubble tea and is popular among both locals and tourists alike.

Golden City Restaurant in downtown, Halibut House on Quadra, Panda Island Chinese Cuisine in Oak Bay, Sun Wah, Ho Tong Restaurant, and Lum's Chinese Restaurant were also nominated by readers and are great options to try.
