First Look at Deer & Dough
A new micro-bakery just opened its doors to the Fairfield community, with cakes, pies, and sandwiches they are ready to welcome the neighbourhood! Tucked behind a patio, and nestled between Martha’s Delectables and Tout de Sweet production kitchens is the small but mighty Deer and Dough Bakery. Formerly occupied by The Cottage Bakery, Deer and Dough have stepped in as the go-to neighbourhood cafe.
Melinda, a documentary filmmaker by trade, started a home-based bakery in September 2020. A lifelong baking enthusiast, she taught herself the art of baking and grew her business selling whole cakes, pies, and cookies by the dozen with such success that it was time for a brick-and-mortar location.
Business partner and neighbour, Chris, has spent the past two decades working in hospitality, most recently at Victoria’s Be Loved. Chris brings his entrepreneurial know-how to the operation and is the savory complement to Melinda’s sweet, adding soup, rolls, and sandwiches, like this moussaka sandwich, to the menu.

Together they are building a cozy little neighbourhood bakery, a small business with a small footprint. Embracing a sustainably focused local mindset they are partnering with Working Culture Bread for to-go loaves and Mile Zero for coffee. Deer and Dough are focused on providing community collaborations. Deer and Dough is a perfect spot to grab some breakfast before the Saturday morning Moss St Market, which is just across the street. Stop by for sweet or savoury treats… or both, 6 days a week.
