Behind the name and decor
Walking into Friends Of Dorothy you will first pass through the iconic green curtain and then be greeted with brick walls brightly and artistically painted and adorned in all sorts of different flowers, ranging in hues, size, and type. At first glance one may assume this is just fun decor and decoration but no, there is a reason for all these original and fun designs that adorn Friends Of Dorothy. The owner of Friends of Dorothy, Rudy Tomazic named this iconic bar after his close aunt Dorothy, and the flowers that adorn the bar are coloured in the representation of the Pride Flag and are a mix of his mother’s favorite flowers. The name “Friend of Dorothy” is also a term that has been historically used as a euphemism to essentially ‘out’ oneself to others, without the fear of any kind of violence or possible discrimination. Having first opened a Friends Of Dorthy in Kelowna, Rudy has now created a world of Oz right here in Victoria. A bright and welcoming atmosphere, Friends Of Dorothy is a place where every person no matter their orientation, race, background, or culture is welcomed.
