Beloved Saanich deli will close at the end of August

Load up on the amazing imported goods that made Maria’s Deli so fantastic

Maria’s Deli will be missed, according to many of its customers.

Last week, the family behind the deli announced that the business would be closing down after nearly half a century at 4080 Shelbourne St. in Saanich.

“Throughout the years, Maria’s Deli has become more than just a place to enjoy delicious European imports; it has become a cherished part of our lives,” reads a Facebook post by Maria Pereria and Susan Coombs, two of the family members behind the business.

“The memories created within these walls are precious to us. From lively conversations to heartfelt laughter, every experience has been a testament to the warmth that our customers have brought into our lives.”

Maria’s Deli was started by Maria and her husband Floyd, after immigrating to Canada from Sao Miguel Portugal. Funny enough, the two actually met in an English class at Vic High.

Maria’s Deli served a ton of incredible goods during its 46-year tenure, mostly imported and local goods that were unavailable at many grocery stores. In fact, that’s why people loved it. One commenter said they’d particularly miss the Borges chorizo, and another remarked on its Portuguese selections and how Maria’s was one place her Portuguese parents felt “at home.”

The final day for the deli will be Aug. 31, so make sure to try and get your fill of the chorizo from Maria’s while you can.
