Winner Spotlight: Bao
Located at 626 Fisgard St. in Victoria BC’s Chinatown, Bao is a cozy 26-seat restaurant, locally owned and owner-operated in Victoria’s Chinatown, serving a variety of gua bao, ramen, bibimbap, Japanese curry, local beer, wine, and cider. Bao was voted by Tasting Victoria readers as one of the Best Hidden Gems in Victoria in our 2022 Best Restaurant Awards, presented by Portofino Bakery. Check out the top 3 showcased in the best hidden gem category, sponsored by the Bay Centre, here.
This hidden gem is owned and operated by Arthur Webb, and Kylie Arnot-Webb, opened in June 2016 and although it has been very popular since then, many find it a hidden gem. The most popular dishes are the Tan Tan Men, all the bao, Chicken Bibimbap, and Pork Belly Ramen.
The bao selection include the Taiwanese Classic–grilled pork belly, sweet peanut powder, cilantro, pickled red onion, hoisin, Chinese BBQ–pork shoulder, BBQ sauce, caramelized onion, pickled cucumber, Buttermilk Fried Chicken–spicy mayo, scallions, slaw, kimchi, a sweet bao: Nutella Banana–deep fried bao rolled in sesame seeds and filled with Nutella, banana, condensed milk, and sweet peanut powder, and more.
Tasting Victoria’s recommendations include the Truffle Chasu Ramen, Mala Dry Spice Chicken Wings, all the baos, and the iced Vietnamese coffee.
Their summer feature is the Spicy Cold Udon Noodle, you have to try it while it’s available.
