Victoria event celebrates all things strawberries

Ichigo Strawberry Moon Market comes to Fernwood this weekend

A strawberry-themed event is taking over Fernwood this Sunday, June 2. The Ichigo Strawberry Moon Market will take place at Fernwood Community Centre and will host over 10 food and drink vendors and more than 40 artists and craft makers. Entry is $2 or free for children.

The family-friendly event organized by Fernwood Makers Party and Local Made By Hand is inspired by memories of growing up in Japan. Food and drink available at the event hope to reminisce on nostalgic flavours and treats from Japanese cuisine. Many of the food vendors and artists will also take inspiration from strawberries.

In true testament to the event’s theme, Go Bind Farms will be bringing in a truckload of fresh strawberries grown in Saanich. The farm will also have a variety of veggies and preserves available as well as pies and baked goods.

Hotdog Hustlin', the Filipino street food cart, will be serving up hotdogs inspired by Japadogs—complete with nori, terimayo and fried onions. It will also have both veggie and meat Filipino rice bowls.

Island Eko Pantry will be cooking up Japanese and Korean dishes. It will have available two types of bibim-guksu, a Korean cold noodle dish. One will have a spicy strawberry gochujang sauce, while the other non-spicy option will have a yuzu soy sauce. Onigiri, miso scones, and black sesame mochi cake will also be available.

OOTA-YA, the grab-and-go sushi shop, will have oshi sushi available for purchase. Oshi sushi is pressed sushi, often shaped into rectangles. Fernwood local Cold Comfort Ice Cream will also be selling strawberry ice cream sandwiches.

Grab a cup of coffee at Coffee to Tow. The mobile cafe will have a full espresso bar set up in its trailer, making specialty coffee drinks. The Doughnut Vault and Lilla Bakes will also be offering freshly baked treats to enjoy alongside a fluffy drink.

Aside from hot food providers, there will be a number of prepared food and drink vendors at the event as well. Little Sins Chocolate will have strawberry bonbons made with vanilla white chocolate ganache, strawberry gel, and an almond cookie base. It will also have a neapolitan bar and a matcha yuzu bar. Holocene Distilling Project, the craft distillery based out of Cobble Hill, will be debuting its latest spirit and will be offering tastings.

Cozy Koji, the producers of miso and koji condiments, will be selling its new cacao sweet koji alongside Seagull Salted Caramels’ handmade chocolate swirl marshmallows. Kome Kome will be offering baked Japanese rice crackers, while Murder Bay Mushrooms will be selling its gourmet mushrooms.

The strawberry and Japanese influences will also be reflected in the handmade goods available from the over 45 local artists and craft makers that will have stalls set up inside Fernwood Community Centre’s gym. Kintsugi Cowgirl will operate a walking photo booth around the event, where attendees can get mini polaroids taken.

The event will also have a mini lino stamp workshop. Attendees can bring their own tote bag or T-shirt and decorate them with lino cut prints, for $5 per print.
