After nearly a year of anticipation, the paper is finally coming down at a downtown vegan burger joint this weekend.

Odd Burger will open its doors at 790 Fisgard St. this Saturday, Aug. 10. The plant-based restaurant will begin with soft open hours, kicked-off by a ribbon cutting ceremony at noon. It is celebrating its grand opening with $1 soft-serve ice cream and free tote bags for the first 30 customers. The eatery will also donate 15% of sales on opening day to the Plant Based Treaty, an organization that aims to place greater focus on food systems in fighting climate change.

Odd Burger is a fast-food restaurant that focuses solely on vegan food that utilizes sustainable and minimally processed ingredients. Since its start in Ontario in 2014 it has quickly gained popularity, with locations opening across Canada. The Victoria location will be the chain’s first restaurant in BC.

Odd Burger is best known for its vegan burgers made with chickpea patties, fake smoky bacon, and dairy-free cheese. Its Pulled Jack burger is a take on a pulled pork sandwich, substituting meat for pulled jackfruit cooked in a smoky barbecue sauce. Vegan chicken burgers and wings are also on the menu, made with seitan fake chicken.

Breakfast is available as well at the vegan restaurant, with breakfast sandwiches being made with tofu eggs and seitan breakfast sausages.

The eatery offers a selection of sweet treats. Its soft-serve ice cream is made from oats and soy and is available in classic cones, sundaes, and milkshakes. S’mores cookies and peppermint Nanaimo bars are available as well.

Odd Burger also has a range of gluten-friendly options available.

Victoria first discovered it would be getting an Odd Burger last September when branded paper went up at the location on Fisgard, stating that the restaurant would be “coming soon.” The year prior, the eatery announced a franchise deal that would open 36 locations across Canada over the course of seven years, with Victoria being one of the cities across BC, Ontario, Alberta, and Saskatchewan included on that list.

Excitement over the opening of the plant-based chain continued to build with a teaser posted on social media by the restaurant in the spring, announcing that construction was underway and that an opening date would be announced soon.

Odd Burger will be open with limited hours for the first few weeks.
