After a month's hiatus, Bao Victoria is back in business

A major leak in their roof forced the restaurant's sudden closure

After shutting down their business for over a month, Victoria’s Bao restaurant is officially opening its doors once again.

Situated in Victoria’s Chinatown on Fisgard Street, Bao is a locally owned and owner-operated 26-seater restaurant that serves a vast variety of Asian fare. Known mostly for their bao buns, the restaurant also serves a selection of ramen, bibimbap, Japanese curry and local wines, cider and beer.

Owned and operated by Arthur Webb and Kylie Arnot-Webb, Bao opened in 2016 and has been very popular since then—in 2022, it was voted one of the Best Hidden Gems in Tasting Victoria’s Best Restaurant Awards and continues to be one of Chinatown’s most visited restaurants to date.

Last month however, Bao experienced a major leak in their roof that caused them to completely shut down until further notice.

“We have had a major roof leak in our kitchen,” Bao wrote in an Instagram post last month.

“We are doing everything we can, and hope to be back up and running quickly. However, due to the nature of insurance it could take some time. We will keep you all posted, thank you for all your support.”

On Tuesday this week, the restaurant provided an exciting new update about their service—their first post since announcing the closure—stating that dinner service will be up and running again today (and perhaps even lunch, depending on how quickly the owners can get everything set up again).

“Thank you for all your kind words and support through all of this, we really appreciate this community of people we have gotten to know over the past 8 years. You guys are the best,” Bao wrote in their latest post.

“This past month has been overwhelming at times, but our staff and us are so excited to be getting back to doing what we love.”
