Thanksgiving Table Talk

The joy and excitement of gathering around the Thanksgiving dinner table is one of the highlights of the autumn season. As we nestle into fall and move indoors, it’s a time to reflect, be thankful, and enjoy local bounty, as we celebrate with family and friends. Hand-in-hand with preparing the Thanksgiving dinner (whether your meal is traditional or not) this is a perfect opportunity to create a beautiful and inviting harvest table, embracing the elements of this season to lend ambiance to your gathering.

Given the access we have to so many local farms here on the Island, it’s easy to find fall décor to enhance your table. This makes setting a beautiful table relatively inexpensive and allows you to be as creative as you like. Autumn colours are always a staple, but touches of white, gold and bronze can be a wonderful addition giving your table extra sparkle and glow.

Find your décor inspiration as you take a walk outdoors, either through the woods or along one of our many local trails. Consider incorporating a few leaves, branches, pinecones, nuts, gourds, etc. to bring natural touches to your Thanksgiving table. A can of gold spray paint works magic to create gold, silver or bronze accents and make your table pop. Custom place cards are easy to make – simply spray paint and fill in your guests’ names once the leaves are dry. Mini pumpkins and gourds from any local farm or supermarket are also a beautiful table feature; either use them in their natural state or choose a spray paint of your choice (allow drying time) and add to your centrepiece.

Candles and the ambient light they provide are also an important addition to any dinner table. Choose autumn colours, or stay with neutral colours such as white and beige if you don’t want them to compete with the other table décor. Candlesticks of all shapes and sizes provide an interesting element, so don’t be afraid to mix and match all types of candleholders. Adding tealights here and there is also a great way to enhance the overall effect.

Most importantly, have fun with your décor, using your own creative freedom to make your Thanksgiving table a work of art that reflects you and welcomes your guests. Invite your friends and family, pop the bubbly, and bring on the autumn feast.
